The exhibition presents the creative works by the
students of the Fine Art and Design Subdepartment of the Department of Arts
of the Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University named after Volodymyr
Vynnychenko “Batik in All its Glory” within the museum art project New
Generation.
The expositional and exhibition art project New Generation is
aimed at the discovery of bright talented personalities in modern visual art
of Ukraine among the students; it presupposes organization of personal and
group exhibitions as well as the publication of catalogues with articles on
art and reproductions of the creative works.
The exposition of the exhibition consists of 37 works by
bachelor degree students in the technique of batik – hot, cold, and pleat
and bind technique (shibori), created between 2017-2020 within the academic
subject “Decorative and Applied Art” under the supervision of the teacher –
Ph.D. in Pedagogics, associate professor, a member of the National Union of
Folk Art Artists of Ukraine, a laureate of the Regional Award in
Architecture, Heraldry, Vexillology, and Decorative and Applied Art named
after Yakiv Pauchenko in the nomination “decorative and applied art” Larysa
Harbuzenko. The curator characterized the creative process in the following
words: “Batik is a unique combination of the art of fabric decoration with
modern technologies. The exhibited works of the young artists demonstrate
the individual approach in using new compositions, the intensity of color,
and the constructability of the spots’ rhythm. They, the NEW GENERATION,
state with their works the fact that batik is modern and stylish!
Metamorphoses of linen, cotton, silk with vax, lacing, needles, dyes, with
the scent of witchcraft made by the hand of new generation – youth. Batik in
all its glory, in brief!”
In Indonesian “batik” means “a drop of vax on cotton fabric”.
It is an art of hand-dyed fabric. Its essence is in putting vax on the
material in those places where the dye will be. The motherland of the batik
is Indonesia and the island of Java. The Indonesian batik as a kind of art
was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. The
art, which absorbed elements of watercolor, pastel, graphic art, glass
painting, and mosaics, has been known from ancient times. Besides the main
types of batik – hot and cold, there are also techniques with mechanical
reservation – knotted technique for bandanas and Japanese shibori, which
allow to create fabrics with abstract, spontaneous patterns and to use when
creating a background for hot and cold batik or free painting. Batik is a
technique that may be used to create sustainable works of art – paintings,
panels, interior elements, as well as for the decoration of clothes,
different décor items, accessories.
The works of the students presented at the exhibition are
created in traditional forms with the help of modern technologies; they are
contemporary versions of batik and are characterized by decorativeness,
elegance of the pictorial means, artistic self-expression. The images
fulfilled in the batiks have a national basis – love to the native land,
knowledge of history, culture, and art of the Ukrainian people. |
